Welcome to CHUMC…
You are welcome here. . .
No matter where you come from and no matter where you are going;
No matter what you believe or doubt;
No matter what you’re feeling or just not feeling;
No matter what you have or don’t have; and
No matter whom you love.
Eres bienvenido aquí. . .
No importa de dónde vengas ni adónde vayas;
No importa lo que creas o dudes;
No importa lo que sientas o simplemente lo que no sientas;
No importa lo que tengas o no tengas; y
No importa a quién ames.
All of who you are is invited into this community of faith by God who loves you, who knows you by name, and who wants a personal relationship with you!
Welcome to Capitol Hill United Methodist, or CHUMC, as we call it. We are so glad you stopped by our website and hope you will drop by on Sunday, come to share or serve one of our daily meals, or call me for a chance to chat as I would love to get to know you.
CHUMC is a different sort of place. We are black and white, housed and unhoused (homeless), gay and straight, red and blue, and the list goes on. In fact, we believe deeply that we do not have to think alike in order to love alike, so we come to learn about God from one another. In a world that is deeply divided, we seek to tear down barriers that separate us from Christ and from each other, and we seek to do so without judgment and with joy!
Traditional in worship but unorthodox in all sorts of other ways, we are more concerned about creating space for you to encounter God than enforcing a specific creed. Join us in learning about God’s love in worship and small group studies, and encounter God’s love as we sit together at community meals and serve one another. Let us grow in God’s love as together we enjoy the day to day and struggle with the difficulties in our lives and world.
We are an open and affirming congregation that is proud to be a part of the Reconciling Ministry Network. Learn more about that – as well as our open wedding policy – here.
In addition, we are actively seeking to be an anti-racist church, standing against racism in all its forms. Learn more about the work of the Racial Justice Ministry Band here.
So please browse this site and send me any thoughts and questions or introduce yourself to me. It is my prayer that the Spirit leads you wherever you need to be. I must admit, though, I’d be overjoyed if God guides you here.
Peace to you,
Rev. Stephanie Vader (she / her / hers)
