Music Director

Position Summary:

Responsible for the music and worship programs at Capitol Hill United Methodist Church (CHUMC), under the direction of the Senior Pastor and Staff Pastor-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC), including all Sunday services and other services like holiday and Holy Week services.

Essential Functions: 

  • Organist and skilled musician.

  • Collaborate and meet with CHUMC staff and Worship Band (committee) to plan worship and series themes that further the vision and mission of CHUMC.

  • Direct the adult choir for the 11:00 AM service working with and supervising the paid section leaders (soprano, alto, tenor, bass).

  • Work with and supervise the 9:00 AM service music leader.

  • Manage the music budget.

  • Play for funeral services of active CHUMC participants (if available).

  • Play for weddings for a fee paid of $250 for the wedding service only (if available).

  • Provide music from a wide variety of music styles including traditional, contemporary, global music, jazz, gospel, Taize style, among others.

  • Strive to choose music reflecting inclusive and liberating theological values of CHUMC, namely, reconciling (pro-LGBTQ+), anti-racist, using inclusive language for God and humanity, welcoming and uplifting those at risk and those marginalized by the larger culture, including the unhoused.

  • Incorporate music in programs for children and youth, social justice events, and other opportunities where music can be integrated to uplift the mission and vision.  

  • Plan occasional special events that promote and highlight music and music making as a spiritual practice.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Functions:

  • As circumstances require, lead video performances of hymns and other music for online worship services.

  • Willing to learn about sound mixing for song recordings.

  • Maintain records and schedules instrument maintenance, and oversees music copyright compliance.

Compensation and Hours:

The music director is a salaried position with the expectation of 10-12 hours of work per week. The salary is within a range of $22,000 - $26,000 annually. Paid vacation is subject to the CHUMC employee vacation policy. Paid Vacation time does not exceed six worship services. Finds substitutes for those six worship services that are paid by CHUMC at our substitute rate outlined in our employee vacation policy. Must adhere to all CHUMC personnel policies including Safe Sanctuaries and agree to participate in a background check.

Nursery Caregiver

Classification: Non-exempt

Supervisor: Director of Discipleship & Service

Position Summary:

The Nursery Caregiver provides dependable and nurturing childcare for young and infant children during CHUMC events and programming so that children are safe, engaged, and well cared for. This position is responsible for supervising and redirecting behavior, ensuring all children and their adults feel welcomed and safe, and being prepared for potential health issues or concerns. This position works closely with the Director of Discipleship & Service for planning childcare and ensuring the nursery is well equipped.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise and care for children in the nursery according to the Nursery policy and procedures so that they are safe and well cared for according to their age, abilities, and special needs

  • Initiate age-appropriate activities, including dispersing healthy snacks, for children while attending to regular needs, such as diaper changes and bathroom supervision, so that they are engaged and cared for mentally, emotionally, and physically

  • Attend to the special and medical needs of children in the nursery, ensuring that all information related to needs is gathered and documented from parents and guardians so that all children’s well being is preserved and encouraged

  • Maintain an organized, tidy, safe, and clean nursery so that activity resources, cleaning supplies, and first aid supplies are easily accessible and available to adults, promptly notifying the Director of Discipleship & Service of any needed supplies before they run out.

  • Support the Director of Discipleship & Service in scheduling childcare for church events, evaluating the Nursery policies and procedures for continuous improvement, and other Nursery- related tasks as assigned so that children, parents, and guardians receive excellent childcare and can fully participate in the life of CHUMC with confidence

Organization Responsibilities:

  • Participate in regular check-ins with the Director of Discipleship & Service

  • Attend and assist in CHUMC events and meetings as needed

  • Be prompt and consistent in attendance so that the nursery is always prepared to receive children at the appointed time

  • Attend to details and deadlines

Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of experience in child and infant care

  • Certified or willing to be certified in Infant & Child CPR and First Aid

  • Negative TB test

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or related experience

Travel and Hours:

This position works primarily on Sunday mornings from 9:30am–12:30pm and requires some evening and other weekend hours as events and meetings arise. This position works onsite at Capitol Hill UMC in Washington, D.C.
